SNL Past and Present

Saturday Night Live is about to start it's 41st season, and whilst Miley Cyrus, Amy Schumer, and Tracy Morgan (He's recovered. Woo!) will be the first few guest hosts. As for new  ast members, there only seems to be one new one. That is Jon Rudnitsky, a stand up comedian. The rest of the previous cast will return.

Apparently he has been under fire for having some kind of controversial tweets. But hey, I doubt that that is going to make him not a good comic. A lot of famous people do controversial stuff so they can get noticed. Just look at Miley...and the Katy Perry and Taylor Swift thing. I bet their record sales are sky rocketing. Maybe. You can read the whole story about this new guy here. After reading that, i have to say i don't blame the public for saying he's controversial.

Anyway, he is the only new cast member which I think could be kind of worrying if I were him. There's actually an interview with Rob Riggle where he talks about when he was hired for SNL and he was the only new member. He said something along the lines of 'It's tough, because everyone else has already been there before, and they know what they're doing'. Want to watch that interview with Rob Riggle? Click here!

Oh well, at least he got on the show. Congrats.

SNL has had so many great alumni go through over the years. I can't even imagine how it must have been in about 1989-1991 it would have been (I think) Dana Carvey, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers. It must have been crazy. They're all so wildly successful now. I wonder if they ever see Lorne Michaels and thank him. Most likely, I guess.

Although, those guys back then probably were thinking, 'wow, how cool would have been to be here when Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, John Belushi and the rest of them were on.' Probably in 10 or 20 years we'll look back and say 'how awesome was Vanessa Bayer, and Kate Mckinnon, and Fred Armisen?!' Won't we? Hmmmm....

Sometimes I worry a bit for SNL's future because Lorne Michaels must be like at least 60 something now right? I watched an interview where he said that the day he retires is the day that Saturday Night Live will end.

So without further ado, Here's to Lorne Michaels never retiring, and another 40 years of SNL!

Comedian Apperances

There is nothing I love more than watching some random movie or TV show, and seeing a comedian. Sometimes they are even right in front of us, even though we don't even realise it. (This is why I always watch the credits at the end. A lot of people don't like me doing that. They think its weird. Oh well.)

For example, have you seen the Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill? Did you know that Dana Carvey has a cameo in it? He's the awkward intestine puppeteer that's towards the beggining of the movie.

Another one that I really like, is if you have ever listened to the commentary for Jim Carrey's movie Liar Liar, you would've heard Tom Shadyac point out Jim's In Living Color character, Fire Marshall Bill. Jim dressed up as his character and stood in the background of a shot that his character for the actual movie (Fletcher Reed) wasn't in. By The Way, if you haven't ever heard of In Living Color before you seriously have to check it out. Its awesome.

Of course, we know that so many comical icons do voiceovers for kids animated movies. Robin Williams was the Genie in Aladdin, Jim Carrey was Horton in Horton Hears a Who, Bill Hader has done not only the new Inside out Movie, but also Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs along with Andy Samberg. There are so many more I want to mention it would take the rest of forever to write them out.

There is one though that I never even knew until today. Did you know that David Spade was the voice of Kuzco in The Emperor's New Groove? Because let me tell you, when I found the out this morning, it felt as if my whole life had been a lie. I never knew that.

This kind of thing where these comics have really random cameos or unpromoted roles in films really make me happy. Hey, what about Bill Murray in Dumb and Dumber To? He was there. The surprise of seeing a familiar face when no one says that they're in there makes the whole thing like ten times funnier in my opinion.

New TV Show for Jim Carrey

In a report just this week, Jim Carrey has been said to have signed on to a new television show being produced for Showtime.

It's called "I'm Dying Up Here".

The show is to be set in the 1970's, in the Los Angeles stand up comedy scene. At the moment it seems to be unclear of what Jim's role in this will be, as only a pilot has been ordered for now. I hope that it does well enough to get at least one season. I think that it will be a ve interesting show.


Think about it, comedy in the 1970s is where its at. SNL had just started in '75 with the likes of John Beluschi, Bill Murray, and Dan Akroyd; Robin Williams was starting to gain popularity from Mork and Mindy, Johnny Carson was in his prime. Not to mention a slew of now popular stand up comedians were starting out and/or beginning to get get tv spots; including Steve Martin, Jay Leno, Andy Kaufman, David Letterman, and hey, even Jim Carrey himself. And of course a ton more, but that might take the rest of the week to write out.

This show I'm hoping will make references to some of these things, and I think that Jim is the perfect match for this show. He was there, starting out in his late teens and early twenties, struggling to get noticed. Although, when you're Jim Carrey it can't be too hard to get noticed. I sort of hope that maybe he'll have a mentor or manager type of role. I think that would suit him best.

The show is yet to have a release date (I think it might being filmed at the moment or in the very near future.) but I'm thinking it might be sometime at the end of this year to early 2016. As happy as I am for this show, I'm kind of feeling that if this show gets green lit for one or more seasons, Jim Carrey won't be in any new films for at least two or three more years.

Please excuse me whilst I go cry.

I don't mean to sound stupid (but I do), I just really enjoy watching Jim in his movies. Hopefully this show can live up to them. I think it might. No, I hope it might. It's uncertain if Jim will actually act in the show, however it has been reported that he is the executive producer, but then again there are some other articlethat say hes an actor in it. The Wonderful World of Late Night Shows

Have you ever watched a late night show? Chances are, you have. And you know what? Once you seen one, you've seen them all.

They're a part of American history and culture, from today's Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O"Brien, and Seth Meyers, to back when David Letterman, Johnny Carson, and even back to Jack Parr ruled the late night television slot.

Haven't you noticed that they all have the same format? I guess though that it's because they wanted to stay with the original idea of what a late night show should be. So that it be a historic setup type of thing.

I actually like how sometimes they change things up with their different segments. For example how Jimmy Fallon will sometimes play games with his guests, or how Conan does remotes and makes fun of his Associate Producer Jordan Schlansky. But the fact is that the format of two guests and one music act/stand up act is forever stuck in my mind and I can't unlearn it. I don't care how many fun games or remotes they put in the shows, I'm still going to be unhappy when the music act comes on because I know he show is nearly over.

Just from that sentence alone, you can clearly see I have no life other than watching TV.

Now, I don't know if anyone else has ever noticed this before, but Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show is the first incarnation of the Tonight Show to not have any plants on the set. Fun fact right there. It actually annoys me a little bit because it's different from what we're used to on these shows. After all I've said about all of these shows being the same...

A lot of my favourite bits have come from Dave Letterman to be honest, he truly has the funniest remotes. I'm unsure if they are scripted or just some spontaneous acting, but I really, really like them.

 

I was actually watching a rerun of the Late Show today and David Letterman was just about to do his infamous Top Ten list. Just before he started, Paul Shaffer says "Why are doing this again?" and Dave replies, "Oh...Just to kill some time."

Cue the audience laughter.

So, that made me wonder, do talk show hosts do these bits, purely for that reason? I'm sure they could get more guests if they wanted to, but then it could get a bit boring perhaps. Or is it because that's just how whoever wrote the first script for Steve Allen (Tonight Show, 1954) said it was to be and so that's how it's always been with every late night style show?

I find it quite interesting to think about this.

But anyway, I thought I would share with you a funny bit that I saw on a Late Show rerun the other day. If you want to watch click here! It is unbelievably stupid, but oh so funny.

You know what, upon looking for this clip just now, I have just realised that the official 'Late Show with David Letterman' YouTube channel NO LONGER EXISTS! I guess because the show has finished they got rid of it, but I mean, Johnny Carson even has an official YouTube Channel..?!What even?!

Also, just for fun, you should totally check out this clip of George Segal on the Tonight Show (1974) where he's trying to teach Johnny Carson how to play the ukulele. I can honestly say this must be the funniest thing I've ever seen on late night TV. It's hilarious.

Dan Schneider has a new Nick TV Show!!!!

I literally just found out that Dan Schneider, (Hi Dan!!) Has a new show coming later this year, called Game Shakers.

Ekkkkkk! I am super excited. I mean know its somewhat meant for kids, but Dan's shows are usually pretty good when it comes to making it fun for everyone in the family.

If it's anything like his past shows, I'm sure it will be a hit!

Aaaaannndd Kel from the late 90's Nick show Keenen and Kel is apparently going to be on it. Cool.

Comedy in England!

Who can't resst the classic English comedy?

Theres a whole heap of them that have been fantastic. Im talking Fawlty Towers, Some Mothers do 'ave Them, On the Buses, and Are You being Served?

If you've never seen those few I've mentioned, definitely check them out. It is totally worth it.

That kind of slap stick, physical humour is the perfect thing to keep people entertained forever.
