Fun at the Supermarket Part 2

So I've done this bit before, but I'm going to have to revisit it, because I've found yet another stupid thing at the supermarket.

It's called "De-Gas".
Yep. That's right, De-Gas is for those of us who just...well, it's pretty much for people for people who have gas. Obviously. But seriously, yet again, it has a really unattractive name.

Don't you think they could name it something better that would attract people to buy it? I really think that whoever owns the Board of Product Naming has had a few too many long nights at the nightclub and has most likely gone to product naming meetings with either a really bad hangover, or the most likely still super drunk. Honestly that's the only explanation I come up with for these stupid things I've found in the supermarket.

Do you live in Australia? because if you do, you can find these 'Fun at the Supermarket' products at Woolworths.

Do you live outside of Australia? I bet you've got different products in your country that have even sillier names. If you find any, leave a comment telling me what it was called and what it was.

Until next time....

Dave's Top Ten

Now that David Letterman has gone off air, there seems to be a hole in comedy that was once known as the 'Top Ten List'.

I actually really miss watching the top ten lists, they were always super funny, witty, and clever. When practicing writing comedy the top ten list was always an excericise I'd do, at least once a week. (And I haven't done it since he went off air. >_< )

Now that tv doesn't have a top ten list, what do you think will be the next iconic desk bit? Jimmy Fallon's Thankyou Notes? Its a similar concept, but at the same time as much as I like Jimmy's bit, it can never out do Dave's Top Ten.

Paul Rudd wants..... Paul Rudd?

On Late Night with Seth Meyers a few weeks ago, Paul Rudd was a guest, but he and Seth did a bit where Paul dressed up as another man (which was an obviously bad disguise) and asked to see Paul Rudd.

You can see it here --> https://youtu.be/3J9pcnTjNd8

I thought it was pretty funny.

And then later on in the show when Paul actually came out to do his interview, he was still wearing the same fake mustache he was wearing before when he was in "disguise".

Paul Rudd is really funny, and I know he's been in a heap of funny things (I Love You Man, Anchorman I & II, SNL's "Kissing Family", etc.), but is he an actual comedian? I'm really confused because I think he should be, but then he keeps doing serious roles in alternate or indie films.

And what's with the 'sports' hat?

Paul, I like you doing comedy. You should do more.

Tom Cruise's Lip Sync Battle

Just yesterday, Tom Cruise appeared on The Tonight Show... and man, was it one not to be missed.

Jimmy Fallon and Tom Cruise battled in what 'critics' (man, I hate that word) are calling the most epic lip sync battle. I think they've forgotten about Will Ferrell's super epic lip sync battle with Jimmy and kevin Heart. Now that one had me on the ground crying because it was so funny.

But this one was still super funny. Click here! http://entertainthis.usatoday.com/2015/07/28/must-see-tom-cruise-sings-the-weeknd-destroys-fallons-lip-sync-battle to see more info.

They even serenaded a girl in the audience. The poor girl looked like she was trying to hold off a heartattack whilst at the same trying not to die of embarrassment.

It was really good though. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW1_dUBzJV8

Procrastination. My Favourite Past Time.

Just yesterday, I was playing around with a little toy box thing. You know, where you've got to get the tiny metal balls into the holes? Anyway, I was messing around with it for at least a half hour, and then I thought, "Man, I need to write something." And then straight away I went back to playing with the toy.

What a time waster.

I suppose it's the original Facebook. Or the original Candy Crush.

I mean, pretty much 60% of my life is me going "hmm... should I film a video, or watch tv?" I'm sure you guys would know that I would choose the responsible option. Obviously tv.

There must be some secret to beating procrastination. I bet it's probably locked up in a safe in like Area 51 or something.

Do you guys procrastinate?  Or do you get on with your tasks.

Zoolander 2! Get Excited!!

Zoolander 2 is coming out in the near future.

Yay!

The first one didn't do very well in the box office ratings, but I really hope that this one will do better.

There's someone in this movie for everyone. No, seriously, have a look at the full cast list.

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are in it (of course), if you like SNL there's Kristen Wigg and I think Fred Armisen has a cameo (maybe something bigger?) in it; Kim and Kanye are in it. They don't even need last names for you to know who I mean. I think I read somewhere that Justin Bieber is even in it.

Literally it seems to be that every person who has ever been famous is going to be in this movie.

I wonder if Elvis will come back from the dead for it. Ok, bad joke...I know.

Zoolander 2 releases 2016 February 12 (according to IMDB) or March 16. (According to other sites that may or may not be unreliable. I've got no idea.)

Why Do We Need Comedy?

Walter: But Kermit, you have to try! The Muppets are AMAZING! You give people the greatest gift that can ever be given!
Kermit the Frog: Children?
Walter: No, the OTHER gift.
Kermit the Frog: Ice cream?
Walter: No, no, after that...
Kermit the Frog: Laughter?
Walter: YES! The THIRD greatest gift ever!

Do you agree?

I believe that comedy I the third most important job that you have. First and second I think should be a doctor and teacher respectively. Because you need to learn stuff and you need doctors to get better. Although, some doctors are kind of dodgy. Be careful of those ones. Wouldn't you love it if just before you have an operation the doctor says "Trust me, I'm a doctor." That one sentence makes me never want to trust a doctor again.

Anyway.

Comedy is one of those things where without it, life would be so boring and ao awful that we probably wouldn't want to live. Or at least not move off of the couch.

When disasters have happened, comedy has been there to cheer us up and try to make us forget what terrible things are happening in our lives. Dave Letterman (not that I would remember 'cause I was 7) entertained America and them laugh when disaster hit NY during 9/11. He along with the other comics on tv, helped America to recover from the disaster. Where would we be without people who do that?

This is why I think comedy is so important, and that's why I do it. It makes people laugh and takes them out of reality. You can feel happy for while.

Racism & Kids

So my dad was cleaning up in the family home today and found a children's book from when I was little.

The thing is though, it's called "Little Black Sambo"

This book was first published in 1967, but if that book were made today, I really don't think that it would even be allowed to be pitched. Unless the writer was looking for a way to end their career.

As soon as I saw it, I was like, 'Oh man, how'd they get this made??'. Of course we've been living in present times were racism isn't tolerated, so we've been sensitised to things like this.

I was at an Airport just the other day, and there was a young family there with two babies. The parents were playing nursery rhymes (VERY LOUDLY might I add) and after a couple, 'Ba Ba Brown Sheep' came on.

Yes, you read that right.

Brown Sheep.

Like seriously, people have to change the lyrics of well known, classic songs these days, just because whoever releases copies of this song are worried they might be sued for being racist?

Should we really be worrying that much?

To end on a lighter note, I really did think that book was pretty funny.

Until Next Time......

Doing Impressions

Impressions, impersonations, imitations. Whatever you call them.... I'm pretty sure about 90% of comedians do them.

Weather they're good or bad. (Ahem, Andy Kaufman. But I think that was just his thing. Because he would always end up doing a fantastic Elvis Presley impression. Andy was good at tricking people.)

People like Robin Williams or Jim Carrey do fantastic impressions. Or at they are very funny impressions. But, can you imagine how long people who do this must stand in front if the mirror and stare at themselves? At least they know exactly how they look.

Well, as for me, I'll have to keep working on them...mine aren't so great at the moment. But hey, got to start somewhere huh?

Judd Apatow's New Book, "Sick In The Head"

I was watching The Tonight Show recently, and Judd Apatow was a guest promoting his new Movie "Trainwreck". He and Jimmy were not only talking about the movie, but also Judd's new book, "Sick In The Head" which sounds like a very interesting book.

Basically, the book is a collection of interviews from other comics over the years, as well as his biographical recount of growing up in New York.

I read a few reviews of the book on Amazon, and pretty much all of them say that this is a fantastic book for the who's who of comedy. That reminds me of this one interview that Dave Letterman did with Jay Leno like back in the 80s (thanks Youtube) and there was a book case just behind Letterman's desk. Jay got a book out and it was about something like every joke known to man. That's kind of how Judd Apatow's new book sounds to me.

I'm excited, I'll have to get a copy. Will you?

If you want to buy it, or just check it out, click here! http://www.amazon.com/Sick-Head-Conversations-About-Comedy/dp/0812997573

Trainwreck

That was a brave move calling the movie "Train wreck". What if it really is a train wreck? Ouch.

I hope though for Bill Hader and Amy Schumer's sake it's not. It would suck to have had so much fun making and putting heaps of hard work in for this movie, and then have it trampled over by critics.

I don't think that this is the type of movie I'd watch though, I'm sorry to say. I watched the trailer when it came out, and it seems ok, but I just know Amy Schumer's type of comedy isn't my thing :/  (UPDATE: ) Ok, I lied, just checked out who else is in the cast and Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller, and Mattew Broderick are in it, just to name a few. (And I like Bill, so yeah. That must the trillionth time I've said that here.) I might have to see it when it comes out on dvd. It is actually sounding pretty good to me right now....But of course, being rated R, I'm still unsure..

Are you guys excited to see this movie? Have you seen the trailer, and what do you think of it??

Comes out July 30th! At least July 30th in Ausralia. I think its already out in the USA. Yous guys are lucky  -____-

Grown Ups 2 Review

I know it came out about two years ago, but I just got around to watching Grown Ups 2, and man is it funny.

I don't even know what critics are saying when they always hate on Adam Sandler, I usually his movies are pretty good. But oh my god, this movie is so crazy hilarious as well as having some special scenes that were a total surprise, as well as a nostalgic 80's themed ending.

Honestly, for me the best part of the movie was this scene where there was a car wash and there were two groups, one male and one female. I don't want to ruin the surprise too much for those of you who haven't seen it, so I've just got two words for you about it. Andy. Samberg.

Not only that but Jorma and Akiva (The Lonely Island) were also in that scene, as well as another guy that I recognised from Saturday Night Live, but I just can't think of his name :/ Oops. Anyway, in that particular scene I could not stop laughing.

There were so many great jokes and physical gags in it. The only downside was the storyline which was kind of all over the place......but at the same sort of similar to the previous. But still it was an ok movie.

Have you guys seen it? What did you think of it?

Fun at the Supermarket

I believe that comedy can be found in absolutely everything. You've just got to look for it. And what better place to look than a supermarket. They have a wide variety of products, that usually have really stupid names.

For example, yesterday when I went grocery shopping, I saw something I've never seen in my entire life before.

This.

I must looked like an idiot just standing in front of this chuckling to myself. But honestly, a drink called YOLO? I bet the people who made this when they had their exec meeting were like: "Hey, uh, what are we gonna call this drink?" "Uuuhhhhhh...what about YOLO?" " Ah, well...does anyone have anything better? Anyone?  Anyone at all? .... oh well...YOLO!"

Those people were like YOLO to not being able to think of a different name?? Oh man, where has the world's originality gone?

I mean, that one called 'Nutshake' is a joke in itself.

In the wise words of The Lonely Island, "Yolo, say no no." -They shouldn't have done this.

Oh, and don't worry, I  have seen so many other stupid things in there before. Like there was that one time there was a "cracker selection" box display. I was wondering where the selection for black people was (If you know what I mean).

Double entendres. They're always so hard.

Once in a blue moon, I write a double entendre. I don't know why, but I can never come up with any.

Tell me, pro comedy writers....what is the secret?! I MUST KNOW!

Even when I write them they suck. Bad. So bad I can't even give you an example because they are so embarrassingly lame.

But I won't give up on it, because quitters never win, right?

One day I'll write some good ones....I hope :/

The Lego Movie...WHAAATT??

Yes. I know. Its for kids. But maybe (if you've got kids), watch The Lego Movie with them. You might enjoy it. Because, well, I did.

I never really thought much of it because when it came out it was marketed straight for kids. I didn't see one ad that said 'starring Will Ferrell', or 'featuring music from The Lonely Island'. (Then again, "Everything is Awesome" was a very childish bubblegum pop track. It was ok though.)

But seriously, no kidding, it had some pretty funny moments.

I was on a flight, looking through the movies that were available. The Lego Movie was there and I had recently found out about "Everything is Awesome", so I thought I'd give it a try. About half way through I thought to myself, "Is that voice Will Ferrel??" Yep, it was.

They didn't  show this in the commercials now did they? ~_~

I can't recall any jokes in it, but I do know I thought they were very clever. Definently try it; it's a bit kiddish if you know what I mean, but underneath that it is a good film.

Casting Call...and I'll Miss It.

Not even 5 hours ago, did I find out that my University will be holding a casting call for a series of promotional videos about the school. Casting and shooting is next week. What a great thing to put in your résumé, right?

I Can't Go.

I would have loved the opportunity to try out for something that didn't even need experience, it could have been my ticket to something greater. But no. I have work. I always knew getting a job was a bad idea... Besides getting money of course. That's probably the only good thing about a job.

So the moral of this story is never get a job, and if you already have one... Quit. Because it will get you nowhere. Unless it's a really good job, like a CEO, or the Head Editor of Vogue. Other than that you should quit.

Lucky that we get second chances right? Mr time will fix everything!

The 2015 Emmys

This year, maybe you've heard Andy Samberg is hosting the Emmys. I bet it will be great with him, he's usually pretty funny.

But that's not what this post is about. Dave Letterman is up for a nomination for Outstanding Variety Talk Show, for the last season of the Late Show.
Although I'm still kind of young and I never was able to see David on TV (thanks to YouTube for being able to watch super old episodes), I still was quite disappointed to see him leave. I'd really like to see him get this award because it's his last chance.

Not to mention Dave's short comeback not so long ago where he came back to do a top ten list about Donald Trump.

Congrats Dave!! Good luck to you!

Let's Go Down To The Tennis Court, & Talk It Up Like Yeahh.....Yeah?

Tennis. If comedy was a sport, it would be tennis.
Think about it, they make funny faces and funny noises....pretty much what a lot of top comics do really.  You want evidence?  You got it.... dude.

Example 2.

And Example 3. (Tennis players grunting. It's great.)

My Joke Writing

There really doesn't seem to be a time or place when jokes come to me. Its not like I sit down say 'ok, I'll write a page in the next half hour.' I can't do that.

Usually I think of stupid little funny things when I'm half asleep at like midnight. At times like these I groggily snatch my phone off of the window seal and type out something in a memo.

One time I woke up in the morning and suddenly remembered I had done this and checked my memos (forgetting what I had written). When I opened it up, it said "Holy Funk - a place where Baptists go to listen to disco music.'

I. Don't. Even. Know.

Anyone else had an instance like this, whether it be you wrote down an idea for a project and came back to it later and thought it was really silly?

Conan at San Diego Comic Con 2015

So right now as I write this I am watching a rerun of Conan's Comic Con special. Man is it good. However, for previous comic con specials, I've only really ever seen bits of it that have been put on YouTube so I don't really have much to compare it to.

But so far it's good.

....

Ok, I've finished watching the episode. It was pretty good. The best part was they did this hilarious joke about Caitlyn Jenner being part of the X-Men. I thought it was absolutely great, but at the same time slightly mean....but I guess that's comedy for you.

I like Conan. I,never used to think much of him, but then I found out that he used to be a writer for The Simpsons and SNL. He mist have a really good résumé...

Have you guys watched Conan's Comic Con special?

Character growths?

Maybe, if you've ever written something, or even something simple like watched a tv show over a period of time, you might notice that the characters can change. I actually never noticed until I started writing my own stuff that I saw this in other shows.

For example, if you've ever seen Sam and Cat (I know sorry bad example but its all i can think of right now >____< ), you would know that Cat is insanely stupid and childish. But from memory, going back to when Victorious was on, she wasn't as stupid back then. Also she never used to wear pink  and have curly hair all the time, she would always wear blue and have dead straight hair.

I think that character development is important, because it gives the character a sense of being something real. Because people always change, but not characters on tv.

My character "Clem", a cowgirl from somewhere in south western USA was originally based off of the charater Champ Kind (Anchorman, Wake Up Ron Burgundy!, Anchorman 2), has now become a character of her own. I don't even know how it happened, but know Clem is a smart, serious kind of person. Like the exact opposite of how the character was in the beginning.

If I decide to make a YouTube channel, you'll be able to see the change.

Failing in Comedy

I mostly write and perform sketch comedy. I've tried writing standup but oh my gosh its so difficult. Kudos to you if you're a standup writer/performer.

I don't know if you can really call it bombing when you do sketch videos , but man, have I failed at some of my videos. How do I know?

My mum, and I swear by this, only ever laughs if something is truly hilarious. So, basically I make my mum watch all of my videos to see if they're funny or not.

It's fool proof.

About 50% of the time my mum has kind of chuckled a bit when watching my videos, but there was one where she was literally cracking up and almost had tears rolling down her face. That is the reaction I'm always aiming for. But at the same time I usually just write stuff that will make me laugh. Isn't that what comedy is about? Being able to enjoy your own material?

Jimmy's Tonight Show with Bill Hader and Cara Delevingne

I think I may have just missed the best Tonight Show episode ever. (At least in my opinion)

Bill Hader and Cara Delevingne were on, and I missed it.

WHY?!?!?!?!

Bill, literally my favorite actor to have ever come from SNL, and Cara, who I think is the world's most beautiful model.....AND I MISSED IT!?

Man, I am so angry with myself. I know I can watch it online, but really I enjoy watching stuff on tv. Because then you know you're experiencing the same thing as a heap of other people at the same time. It's like going to the theatre or cinema, but just at your own home.

Anyway....I'll have to watch the episode when I get a chance.

Tell me, was it a good one?

My Ideas for Comedy

The different ways that you could present comedy almost seem obvious.
There's standup, or sketch, or if you like writing you could do some kind of irony.

But I was thinking, what if I presented comedy in a different way? Would people still be interested? (I hope so!)
I thought about doing a recording of my characters, like a audio sketch. Maybe something you might hear on a comedy record?? (I don't know I think I'm too young to have ever heard a comedy record).
Anyway, I thought it could be cool to just hear the different characters and I could mess around with sound effects and stuff, and the listener could be taken on some kind of journey.

AND it wouldn't be so much work to make like a three or four minute audio sketch compared to a three or four minute video sketch.

Do you guys think this is a cool idea?? I do.

A Bad Emcee??

So my friend and I went to a standup comedy open mic night recently to check out the place and other comics performing there. The first thing i noticed was that the mc was unbelievably terrible.

I am so sure he had been doing this job for months or something, but he was a stuttering wreck! I thought that emcees were meant to get the crowd excited for the comics, but oh my god this guy was literally Shy Ronnie. If you know who shy Ronnie is, he's one of Andy Samberg's SNL characters. Check it out.

So this guy was up on stage and stuttering and I mean like really stuttering, and he actually almost dropped his paper that had the other comedians names on it or whatever. I though that if you got that kind of job you have to be a refined comic who's been doing it for years? Maybe not in this case....

Honestly, I'm kind of worried people will hate them or criticize me for not being funny/funny enough.

Who You Gonna Call?!

Surely by now you've heard there's some new ghostbusters in town............buuut they're ladies.

Yay for feminism?

It would've been nice to just have the old guys come back for a sequel of them being retired or something,  but i guess it's good to be fair and have some girls join in too.

Kristen Wiig, Kate Mckinnon, Leslie Jones, and Melissa McCarthy are our new ghostbusters, ready to take on the bad guys. Or at least bad ghosts.

I'm actually pretty excited for this since when I was a kid I'd always wish that such classic/iconic films would have girls in them  (since, you know, i am a girl).

American comedy varies a lot. I don't know how to explain it, but heaps of comics do a cheerful kind of 'look at me I'm so happy' kind of act (if you know what I mean).

It's just a fun gag type of thing. Please don't take it too seriously... Haha.
I hope you'll enjoy it :D

My Characters

Over the past 12 or so months, I have come up with some comedic characters that are so out of this world, if you saw them you'd probably ask 'what on earth is wrong with Morgan?!'
Don't worry guys, I'm fine. But my characters on the other hand.....
•Girl With Braids (she doesn't actually have a name but that's what all of my scripts say). A childlike insane girl who says literally whatever is on her mind (which mind you is usually something annoying.)
•Clem. A girl who's kind of like a cowgirl with a southern accent. She is the mature one and wants everything to be serious.
•Victoria. A Russian goth who pretty much hates everything and is very unenthusiastic.
•Nancy. An idiot who seems normal but is so stupid she can't hold a job.
•Britney. A 14 year old girl who is a parody of the average teen girl. She's ignorant, and in love with One Direction. She only wears pink

That's all for my reoccurring characters, I hope you found them interesting.

Mr Jim Carrey

Would I want a job on comedy if this guy didn't exist? Probably not. So ladies and gentlemen, I give you the performance that made me want to be like Jim....

Favourite SNL member

Saturday Night Live has been going since 1975 and has 40 seasons. The amount of comics come and gone must be monsterous.
For me, I can't choose a favorite cast member because there's too many great ones. So I'll just give you my top ten?(possibly more)

10. Bill Murray. What can I say....Classic.
9. Fred Armisen. The list of accents this guy does is incredible.
8. Andy Samberg. Have you guys ever seen the Awesome Town pilot?
7. Mike Myers. I love his mad characters-my favourite, 'Philip the hyper hypo'.
6. Will Ferrell. He kinda looks like the guy you don't want to mess with in a dark alley, but at the same time he's hilarious.
5. Kristen Wiig. Two words -Target. Lady.
4. Jay Pharaoh. Now, I haven't seen much of this guy on SNL, but what I have seen is crazy good. This guy is phenomenal.
3. Lorne Michaels. I don't really know if you can call him a cast member, but when he is in sketches, they are so funny they'll make you fall of your seat.
2. Dana Carvey. A lot of people seem to not like him so much, but I'm a huge fan. Everything he does is gold.
1. BILL HADER. What can't this man do?!?!??! Oh my gosh, he's funny, his characters are great, he seems to have good chemistry with the rest of the cast (when he was on).

Of course there's heaps more I love (ahem.....Andy Kaufman, Dan Akroyd, Vanessa Bayer, Kate mckinnon, Seth Meyers, Bobby Moynihan.) there's too many greats!

So, after all that....Who's your favourite?

My Comedy Style

Have you ever watched a great comedy film, loved it and then thought to yourself 'Oh my gosh, I would never let a child see this!'? This thought is pretty much me every time I watch a comedy gala on tv, or a Farrelly brothers movie (I love me some Farrelly Brothers.)

Growing up I would always want to watch the stand up comedy festivals and galas on tv, but my parents would never let me. I only found out when I was about 16 or 17 why this was. On this particular night my dad and i were watching a comedy gala and it was that moment that I realised basically every 10th word (or less) was f***.

Now, maybe it's just me but I don't find anything funny about that word being a punch line.

At 18 I decided that I wanted to be some type of comedian, even maybe the writer behind the scenes; but I dont want to change my ways and use a heap of profanity if that's what is going to make people laugh. I think there was a quote a comedian ( forget who) said which was along the lines of  "a comic can get a ton of laughter from swearing, but a comic who works hard on the techniques of comedy can get just as much of a reaction."

This gives me hope. Does anyone else feel that too many comedians over-swear?

So my comedy is largely family based so that everyone can enjoy it. I've never written a joke that uses profanity, however, I've written double entendres and other jokes that imply adult things but nothing that I would rate more than pg13.

So, until next time....

Introduction

Hello!

My name is Morgan, I like comedy. Actually I've been writing a lot of sketch style comedy for about almost two years now. But..... Whether it's good or not... I don't know. I've got a stack of stand up jokes too, one day I'll get up the courage to do an open mic night. Anyway....

On here I'll be posting comedy related things, I think I might start a youtube channel for my sketches (maybe, I'm scared!)
Please stay tuned for comedy related news on comedians, films, (SNL??idk..), and updates on whatever late night show segments I'm loving.

Until then....
