Sometimes Things Just Aren't Funny

I just finished watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective for the millionth time. Except, I was watching it with a bunch of friends. Now, I can imagine at this point your probably thinking, 'Gee Morgan, nice story, but who cares?!?' Well the point is that I was laughing at parts that everyone else was not laughing at, and everyone else was laughing at parts that I didn't find too funny. Basically, the point I'm trying to make here is that no matter what a comedian does, or the jokes they tell, there's going to be someone not laughing.

A lot of the time I think that people who are trying to start out in the comedy world (ahem....this gal (did I really just say 'gal'? Ew...)) often think their jokes aren't going to make people laugh. which is a possibility, but at the same time I think that you've got to remember that everyone has a different sense of humour. WHICH SUCKS!!!   It's a bit annoying that comedy is subjective, but I think that once you can find your audience everything is all good.

For example, that movie I was watching, Ace Ventura, many people think that it is one of Jim Carrey's greatest movies. I guess because everyone who watches it thinks he's incredibly funny right? Well if you go and watch some of Jim Carrey's early stuff from a million years ago (1980), you'll see him doing a lot of the same stuff like impressions and singing things but he really isn't any good at it. (Sorry Jim :/ ) But then like I said, he perfected things and gained his own audience.

Practice makes perfect right?

I guess that when you bomb as a comic, you shouldn't really be too worried, because someone out there in the universe would have laughed. Unless it was a terrible joke that should have never seen the light of day. In that case you already know why no one laughed. You know, even pro comedians get no laughs sometimes. Honestly if you've watched The Tonight Starring Jimmy Fallon within the past two months, you would have seen a couple of times where his Thankyou Notes got no laughs, and then Higgins got angry at the audience for not laughing. Ha. Even SNL jokes sometimes fail. I swear about 80% of the SNL audience just watches the show to see if anyone breaks character, or to see if the cue cards get dropped and the cast have to quickly make random stuff up.

I actually remember watching the Weekend Update bit once and a joke got absolutely no laughs. The audience was silent, and so whoever it was doing the bit (I'm not sure but I think it was Seth Meyers?) ripped up the card the joke was on. And then the crowd roared. Stuff ups on SNL are so funny.

People find different things funny, or maybe sometimes they just don't get the joke. Whatever it is, and if you're a comic, you should remember that someone out there probably would have laughed. But seriously, Don't you hate it when people don't laugh?

Until Next Time...
Morgan ^^
